PROJECTS
CERTIFIED CARBON OFFSETS
Luara Ceramic Fuel Switching / Forest Protection Project – certified under the VCS and Social Carbon standards – Luara Ceramic is a small and typical red ceramic plant located in the southeast of Brazil which used native wood extracted from nearby Cerrado* forest to supply the heat necessary to produce 550,000 ceramic devices per month. This practice has led to the deforestation of this very crucial biome located in the southern region of Mato Grosso do Sul State of Brazil. This project has prevented the use of about 600 cubic meters of native wood per month as a fuel for the kilns by completely substituting it with renewable biomass.

Brazilian Methane Avoidance / Clean Water Initiative – certified under the VCS standard – The Irani project is a wastewater methane avoidance project at a Brazilian pulp and paper manufacturing company in Campina da Alegria district, Vargem Bonita city, Brazil. The purpose of the project is to avoid methane emissions from the current wastewater treatment and disposal practices. It involves introducing a new wastewater treatment scheme, which will stop anaerobic digestion of organic wastewater in settlement ponds. Because of the project, the treated wastewater can now be directed to a river without potentially harmful organic material in it.

TREE PLANTING PROGRAMS
Brazilian Matâ Atlantica Plant-A-Tree Agroforestry Project - This project is supported by the Big Tree plant-a-tree program. The goal of the Brazilian Matâ Atlantica plant-a-tree agroforestry project is to help preserve and reforest Bahia’s critical rain forest through indigenous tree plantings and cacao production. The aim is to drive sustainable agro-forestry projects, support the Mata Atlântica’s rich biodiversity and create jobs for the unemployed in rural Bahia.
The goal of this project is to not only replant indigenous trees on the degraded land that once held forest but to support the development of forest products in order to maximize the value of the reforested land to local communities.

PROJECTS IN DEVELOPMENT
Indonesian Primary Forest Conservation Project - Deforestation accounts for approximately 20% of the world’s carbon emissions; that is more than all global transportation! This endeavor (Project Sula) will halt the deforestation of 100,000 acres of primary, pristine Indonesian rainforest and prevent the release of millions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere while empowering local communities on the island of Sulawesi. In addition, this project will protect this exceptional and valuable ecosystem that is home to variety of life, including Orangutans, Elephants and Tigers. It will also protect pristine watersheds, conserve soil and stabilize local weather patterns and much, much more. This project is in development stages and more information will be posted as it becomes available. As for protecting the earth’s precious forests, this is as good as it gets.
Brazilian Amazon Avoided Deforestation Project - The state of Pará, in Brazil, is in the center of the “ARC OF DEFORESTATION” of the Amazon rainforest. Big Tree Climate Fund has been asked to help protect an area of 32,000 hectares (80,000 acres) of this pristine environment. The land, which borders a national park (Parque Estadual do Cantão) and is located on one of the most important tributaries of the Amazon River (the Rio Araguaia), is a natural gem containing a wealth of biodiversity including the elusive Jaguar. Its preservation would also help preserve important wildlife corridors between the park and other patches of forest.
Big Tree Climate Fund is beginning the process of seeing to it that this land is preserved for future generations. This project is in development stages and more information will be posted as it becomes available.
